Ancient Rome

459896_pompeii_street_scene.jpgOld Romans could not bury their dead inside the city walls, so they did it along the most frequented ancient roads, for example the Appian Way, the "Regina Viarum", queen of all the roads, as the ancients called it. The first long road built specifically to transport troops outside the smaller region of greater Rome. The few roads outside the early city were Etruscan. By the late Republic, the Romans had expanded over most of Italy and were masters of road construction.  Their roads began at Rome, where the master itinerarium, or list of destinations along the roads, was located, and extended to the borders of their domain - hence the expression, "All roads lead to Rome."

The main part of the Appian Way was started and finished in 312 BC. The road began as a leveled dirt road where small stones and mortar were laid. On this gravel was laid, and finally topped with tight fitting, and interlocking stones to provide a flat surface. Some of the stones were said to fit so well that you could not slide a knife into the cracks. Lined with Important monuments along the way, you will enjoy this peaceful place outside of Rome.

A bite to eat and off to the Catacombs. We will exit the old city walls, take a bus and ride along the Appian way, until the famous Catacombs. We will learn why these cemeteries are called catacombs, we will visit one of them and we will stroll over the old Roman stones and enjoy the famous landscape with the umbrella-pine trees.

Entrance fee to the Catacombs is 6E.
