Brunello and Backroads

Pienza and Montepulciano are two of Tuscanys favorite hilltowns.  Our first stop, the sweet and picture perfect city of Pienza.  Pienza is the passion of many a filmmaker, such as the "English Patient", and "Romeo and Juliet". Sheep dot the valley floor and Pecorino spills from the shops. We take the time to stroll the tiny streets of this beautiful little hill town, taste the cheeses, and a variety of Balsamic Vinegars in flavors too numerous to mention!  In Pienza  you will learn of the  origin of the town and about his  famous founder Pope Pio II ( Enea Silvio Piccolomini), we will  visit  the Duomo and Palazzo Piccolomini.  We can linger to shop, and take photos of the valley below and that is breathtaking!   We eat lunch here in a small trattoria that is typical Tuscan food, before heading off to Montepulciano, but stopping  first at the cheese factory where we can see Pecorino being made, and fill up our own bottle of sheep milk from a machine for only 1.00 Euro...

Continue on to Montepulciano has a fascinating history that  focuses on the Renaissance and visiting the Duomo we will learn of the importance of the Della Robbia family.  We will then, of course, visit one of the famous wine cellars for a nice tasting.  This concludes our beautiful day in the Tuscan hill towns of Pienza and Montepulciano.

My guests say:

"Doumina gives you an up-close insiders view of the treasures surrounding the enchanted hill town of Cortona. You like olive oil? Meet a farmer who picks his olives, and the man who presses them. Art your thing? Listen to the passionate sermons of her guide, and real-life descendant of Cortona's own Luca Signorelli. Want to eat the way the heartiest Tuscans do? For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you will. Guaranteed."
